Regulatory Frameworks and How They Affect My Business

As I will be working in the journalism industry, I will have to be aware of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), who are the UK’s regulator of newspapers and magazines. Therefore, I must follow the Editors’ Code, which sets out the rules that newspapers and magazines must follow. There are 16 main rules that must be followed set out in the Editors’ Code; Accuracy, Privacy, Harassment, Intrusion into grief or shock, Reporting Suicide, Children, Children in sex cases, Hospitals, Reporting of Crime, Clandestine devices and subterfuge, Victims of sexual assault, Discrimination, Confidential sources, Witness payments in criminal trials and Payment to criminals. However, IPSO also offer services such as advice and guidance (which is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020/21), and training and guidance for journalists so that they are updated with the regulatory framework set. IPSO is funded by RFC (Regulatory Funding Company) which focuses strictly on financing regulatory bodies with relevance to journalism and publishing.

ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) are another regulatory body I must be aware of when displaying ads on my blog, as it will be online-based. This body in particular are focused on resolving complaints from ads which come from the general public, and they claim to have resolved around 34,700 complaints in 2019. They are not funded by a specific organisation and their work comes at no extra cost to the taxpayer, and so their funding is sourced from the government only.

Both of these are extremely important to be aware of when running my business. Firstly, the nature of my work will be regulated by IPSO, the regulatory body of the press, which is vital to keep in mind as my business is an online blog displaying information of which must be factual and trustworthy, which is something IPSO will regulate. However, ASA will also be impactful on my company as in the early days of my business, income will come from ads - online ads as the blog is online - and so I must make myself aware of ASA'S policies as well to ensure that the ads I display are legal and non-offensive. Lastly, as the strictest regulation in my opinion, copyright is something that will be the epitome of regulations I must ensure are followed while running my business. As the content I produce would be considered intellectual properties, they will be automatically protected by copyright laws, although this also means that sources I cite or refer to are also protected, thus this is something I must keep in mind while producing content.
