B. Unit 1 & 2 (t9) - Cultural policy

Task 9 – Cultural policy

The DCMS

DCMS is the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. They are a government body who aim to drive growth and promote Britain abroad while protecting the culture and artistic heritage. They also provide funding to the creative industries through other organisations such as Arts Council England. They help to connect the UK, supporting the media, ensuring social responsibility and growing the economy through offering more available jobs. Thus, they are vital towards the growth and sustainability of the creative industry as a whole, as funding in recent years has been drastically reduced.

In recent announcements, the DCMS have discovered that as of 2019. 2.1 million jobs across the country were within the creative industry, which makes it the leading job sector in the UK. Recently, they have announced that more than 1300 arts and cultural organisations are benefitting from a share of £257 million as a financial boost. As well as this, as of January 2021, the DCMS have announced a new programme which will be put in place to measure the value and importance of culture and heritage capital to society, which they believe to be beneficial as they believe that the value of culture and heritage capital are often understated, therefore making ideas for improvement harder to measure and act upon.
